Weird title i know but will try to cover a lot about the weather, trail conditions, equipage, etc.
Weather: Ugh! Rain is the theme almost everyday. That's all New England has gotten this summer. Record breaking in some cases. Some say the new normal, but weather isn't measured in a season. It takes years to see if this is what it will be. The trails don't get a chance to dry out so it is incredibly wet and muddy.
Trail Conditions: The A.T. has existed for 100 years  roughly. To say at times it is a trail is a serious stretch. Mud pits, going stra up or down a hill, weird long stone steps. I know it takes volunteers, but skipping around and doing work and  leaving areas unmaintained is hard on hikers.
Equipage: Trying to do a blog and YouTube hasn't worked out. I will only do a blog. The Gopro is a pain to use. Battary doesn't last long, it isn't very functional as a camera either. I would have to charge it everyday. I'm not going to carry a large battery to recharge it. It screen is dinky and the settings are all on it. So I have to swipe it to get to things. Uploading happens thru the app on my phone also. I want to enjoy the hike and be unencumbered by tech as  much as possible. Which leads me to the Garmin 67i and Mini inreach II. More tech i chose, a bad choice to a degree. Dont know which i will keep when Tarren leaves. Probably the mini. Both require  recharging and subscriptions to use. Bad choices on my part. I will use my phone with the Gaia map app. Yes it needs charging but it does alot of what I need and cell coverage is almost everywhere.

Travel to the East Coast

Yesterday was the culmination of many months of preparation  for the trip. We took a bus from home to Seatac airport. We had both applied for TSA Precheck which was a breeze getting the security. It was almost like the old days of flying.  Now came the big wait of 3 hours before our red eye flight to Boston. Arrived early as we had a 60 mph tail wind. The good thing is that Tarren was getting  sleep. Virginia and I slept only a little.  Getting the rental truck was a bit of a fiasco.  The first truck was dead, the second truck bed was not cleaned. Number 3 did the job. Logan Airport was a trip getting out of but got going north. Traffic was gnarly. Tarren ate something that did not agree with him and has spent most of the day throwing up. After a couple of stops to get some things we couldn't bring on the plane we are staying in Freeport, ME for the night. Weather  forecast  is looking nasty for tomorrow with up to 1" of rain.

LIGHT IS NOT RIGHT

The vast majority of thruhikers i see are going light or ultra light.  The most common conversation in camp is how many miles they did. Almost everyone has an obsession/ cult following with Sawyer Squeeze filters. Light is not right. My reasons are I need to be comfortable. Most people buy from the cottage industry makers of ultra light gear who seem to have taken over the gear scence related to A.T. thru hiking. The people I see with this stuff carry very little. They also have to modify it to make it comfortable. Many if the packs are frameless. Frameless packs have a history of being innovative but not working. To work a lot of forethought has to go into packing. I've used 2 over the years that worked. Both by Wildthings which sadly doesn't really exist anymore. Taken over by an investment fund. Appalachian Trail North to South

We start the A.T. on July  18th. We have a 3 day campsite  at Abol campground. I have been thinking about doing this since I was 16. Tarren came up with the idea last year when we hosted P.C.T. hikers at Guye Cabin. He thought it would be a great idea to hike it together.  I thought about it for a short moment and suggested that we do the A.T. instead. He liked it so plans were started.  I've spent the time since last year planning for the trail and gear. Ginger is going with us for the first 4 weeks as support. The plan is to break up 2/3rds of the trail into overnights and day hikes. If all goes as planned it will get us to mile 170.
